Thesis by Luis Felipe Coimbra Costa receives “Educational Award for Outstanding Contribution to Computational Science Education” from the “SIGHPC Education Chapter”.

The Systems and Computer Engineering Program is proud to announce that graduate and doctor Luis Felipe Coimbra Costa was the winner of the Educational Award for Outstanding Contribution to Computational Science Education, granted by the ACM SIGHPC Education Chapter, on September 28, 2024 , in Atlanta.

This international award recognizes exceptional contributions to computational science education by highlighting the relevance and impact of your doctoral work.

Luis Felipe was a student in the Data and Knowledge Engineering line, supervised by professor Geraldo Xexéo (PESC) and co-supervised by professor Ana Isabel Baptista Moura Santos, from the Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon. He continues to collaborate with PESC research, at the Laboratory of the Future, mainly in the Igualdade STEM project. His work had already received the SBC Innovation Seal in 2024.

Luis Felipe was awarded for the development of Heroine’s Learning Journey (HLJ), an innovative project aimed at addressing gender disparities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education, with an emphasis on computational science. HLJ combines engaging storytelling with the Heroines Learning System (HeLaS), promoting the inclusion and motivation of women and other minorities in STEM courses. The research highlights how implementing heroic narratives can transform the online learning experience, resulting in a significant increase in women's enrollment and engagement in STEM courses. The results of this work have demonstrated a significant impact on increasing diversity and participation in historically underrepresented disciplines.

SIGHPC is the first international group within a large professional society dedicated exclusively to the needs of students, teachers, researchers and professionals in the field of high performance computing (HPC).

This international recognition not only reflects Luis Felipe's academic excellence, but also highlights the Systems and Computer Engineering Program's commitment to fostering research that generates social and educational impact.
