Professor Diana Sasaki (UERJ and former PESC student) elected as an Affiliated Member of the ABC
Professor Diana Sasaki (UERJ) was elected as an Affiliated Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) during the General Assembly held on November 29, 2024.
This Ordinary General Assembly elected new members to the ABC. Among the full members, six women and eleven men were elected, raising the percentage of female full members from 21.88% to 22.26%. As for the affiliated members, 14 women completed their terms, and 14 new ones joined, maintaining the percentage of female affiliated members at 40.67%. See the full report here.
Diana Sasaki completed her master’s degree at PESC under the supervision of Professor Celina Figueiredo and Simone Dantas de Souza (click here to view her dissertation). She then pursued her PhD with us, again under the supervision of Professor Celina Figueiredo, alongside Simone Dantas de Souza and Myriam Preissmanne (click here to view her thesis).
Currently, Diana Sasaki is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). She is also a permanent professor and Deputy Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Computational Sciences (CCOMP/IME/UERJ), as well as a permanent professor in the Specialization Program in Mathematical Learning (IME/UERJ). Additionally, she serves on the Advisory Board of UERJ's Graduate and Research Dean's Office (PR2).
Diana has received several prestigious honors, including the For Women in Science Award 2017 by L’Oréal/UNESCO/ABC (Mathematical Sciences). She is a Level 2 Research Productivity Fellow of CNPq, a Prociência Fellow at UERJ, and was named a Young Scientist of Our State in 2021.
Her academic background includes a degree in Mathematics from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), a master’s degree in Systems and Computer Engineering (COPPE/UFRJ) funded by CAPES, and a doctorate in Systems and Computer Engineering (COPPE/UFRJ) funded by CNPq. She also completed a sandwich PhD program at the G-SCOP Laboratory/INPG in France (funded by CAPES/COFECUB). Diana has undertaken postdoctoral research at COPPE/UFRJ (funded by CNPq) and at Université Paris-Dauphine in France (funded by CNPq). She is also a proud mother of a son born in July 2017.
