The paper "Optimized 2D Ball Trees" by doctoral student Luiz Carlos do Santos Coutinho Retondaro and professor Claudio Esperança (both from PESC) received the award for best paper in the Computer Graphics and Visualization track at SIBGRAPI 2021. This event is the largest. and the most traditional international event in the field of Computer Graphics held in Brazil, now in its 34th edition.

The paper describes a series of techniques for constructing spatial data structures known as "Ball Trees", which are widely used in applications where the proximity involving irregular objects needs to be estimated.
