Death of Prof. Clovis Caesar Gonzaga
With regret, the Systems Engineering and Computer Science Program at COPPE/UFRJ communicates that Prof. Clovis Caesar Gonzaga passed away on August 14, 2021.
Prof. Clóvis joined COPPE-UFRJ in 1968 as a student and later as a professor. In the Systems and Computer Engineering Program, he did his master's degree supervised by Jean-Paul Jacob and his doctorate supervised by Nelson Ortegosa da Cunha in 1973, studying continuous and discrete optimization.
He participated in the formation process of COPPE, where a group of enthusiastic young people worked under the influence of Alberto Coimbra's vibrant pioneering spirit. He worked at COPPE for several years with search algorithms in graphs and their application to planning problems of electrical energy systems, collaborating with researchers from Eletrobrás.
He left his mark of excellence at PESC, where a large part of the faculty benefited from his classes and inspiring academic guidance, having supervised the doctoral theses of professors Antônio de Oliveira, Ronaldo Marinho Persiano, and Márcia Fampa.
